Jenkins Could Bolster DL

Cullen Jenkins, now 32, had 29 sacks and five forced fumbles during seven seasons with the Packers.

The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran defensive tackles Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson on Monday.

Jenkins didn't want to leave Green Bay when he signed a five-year, $30 million contract with the Eagles in 2011 and he could be back in 2013. A source, pointing to Jenkins having turned 32, said the Packers likely would consider a reunion as long as a deal is on its terms.

The Packers never adequately replaced Jenkins when he left two seasons ago, though Mike Neal flashed some promising production this past season. With the Week 17 ACL tear sustained by second-round pick Jerel Worthy leaving his availability for the first half of the season in jeopardy, the Packers have a need for an interior pass rusher.

Jenkins started every game the last two seasons. He was due to make $5.5 million this season, but rebuilding Philadelphia cut Jenkins. After spending the first seven seasons of his NFL career with Green Bay, Jenkins left for Philadelphia.

Jenkins had 5.5 sacks in 2011 and four in 2012. He had 29 sacks and five forced fumbles in seven seasons in Green Bay, including 6.5 sacks in 2006, and 7.0 in 2010, when he was a mainstay on a championship defense that ranked second in points allowed.

"It's one of the most difficult parts of the job. He has been a very productive player in this league for a long time," Roseman said of Jenkins. "By releasing him at this point, it gives he and his agent more time to sign on with another team."
