The New York Jets were supposed to be the doormat of the AFC, but their quickly gaining momentum and respect across the league after shocking the New Orleans Saints 26-20 on Sunday.

It feels like 2009 all over again. The Jets, with a rookie quarterback under center, rode a bruising running game and powerful defense to a shocking upset win over Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in Week 9. Running back Chris Ivory, acquired by New York on draft day from the Saints, victimized his former team carrying the ball 18 times for 139 yards and a touchdown.

Geno Smith didn’t put on a dazzling performance on Sunday, but he also didn’t commit a turnover; rushing for a score late in the second quarter to put Gang Green ahead to stay.

The Jets’ front-seven had Brees under duress throughout the contest, flying through for two sacks, six quarterback hits while the secondary recorded two interceptions. New York, the NFL’s top rush defense, held New Orleans to merely 41 yards on 13 attempts.

Pegged as one the league’s worst teams entering the 2013 season, the Jets enter their bye week at 5-4 and currently sit in the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC.

Rex Ryan’s squad is one of the most surprising stories across the NFL and will try to keep their magic carpet ride on course when they travel to Orchid Park, New York to take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.
