1) New York Giants: They really have no weaknesses and despite spate of
injuries in the secondary, no opponent so far has been able to take advantage.
Last Ranking: 3
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), OT (veteran depth), LB (veteran depth)
2) Indianapolis Colts: They haven't lost anything in their passing game without
Marvin Harrison or Anthony Gonzalez. The new defensive changes in scheme really
came up big last week.
Last Ranking: 2
Needs Still to be Filled: RT (veteran depth)
3) Minnesota Vikings: The offensive line is clearly no better than average and
the defense isn't nearly as solid as last season. Still, this is a solid team,
but they must improve a little on both sides of the ball in order to get deep
into the playoffs.
Last Ranking: 1
Needs Still to be Filled: G (veteran depth), C (veteran depth), LB (veteran depth), S (veteran depth)
4) Baltimore Ravens: For the first time in team history, they have a franchise
quarterback with Joe Flacco. They also have one of the better coaching staffs
and perhaps the best offensive coordinator in Cam Cameron. There's a small
concern, however, with the defense, which doesn't look anywhere near as dominant
as last season.
Last Ranking: 5
Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), ILB (depth), S (veteran depth)
5) New Orleans Saints: Finally, they have a defense which is at least average.
They also are second in the NFL in blitz percentage, so Gregg Williams is able
to run the defense like he wants to, that explains why they are getting so many
turnovers. The offense is arguably the best in the NFL.
Last Ranking: 7
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (depth), DT (depth), DE (depth), OLB (depth)
6) New York Jets: Have to be impressed with rookie QB Marc Sanchez. However,
they are a running football team and he hasn't been asked to win any games yet.
He will have to throw it quite a bit on Sunday. It will be a great test for
their great defense against a great Saint offense.
Last Ranking: 9
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (starter/depth), G (veteran depth), RT (veteran depth), DE (depth), OLB (veteran depth),
S (depth)
7) Philadelphia Eagles: They are in great shape at quarterback. The issues are
mainly on defense. They must find more consistent play from the linebackers.
Don't be surprised if veteran MLB Jeremiah Trotter winds up starting by early
November.
Last Ranking: 8
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (LT/RT depth), DT (veteran depth)
8) Pittsburgh Steelers: Notice since SS Troy Polamalu went down with his knee
injury how offenses are able to move the ball more consistently against them?
This is a different defense without No. 43. The once great running game is
non-existent and they've become more of a passing offense.
Last Ranking: 6
Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), OT (veteran depth), OLB (depth), S (depth)
9) New England Patriots: They played much better defense last week against the
Falcons, but they still lack a quality pass rush. They just might have found the
cure to their running game issues with veteran Fred Taylor.
Last Ranking: 11
Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), WR (veteran depth), LT (depth),
ILB (depth)
10) Atlanta Falcons: The deep passing game, which was a staple of their offense,
has been gone so far this season. The defense needs to play the run better.
Last Ranking: 4
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), DT
(depth), OLB
(depth)
11) Green Bay Packers: Some how, they have to find a way for WR Greg Jennings to
become a factor again in the passing game. When he's involved more consistently,
that should open up the running game.
Last Ranking: 10
Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), OT (RT/LT veteran depth), G
(depth), DE
(veteran depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), S (veteran depth)
12) Denver Broncos: They haven't faced a good offense yet, but the defense
certainly is improved. The running game looks also to be improved, but the
passing game is a major work in progress.
Last Ranking: 14
Needs Still to be Filled: LT (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth), S
(veteran depth)
13) San Francisco 49ers: They played a very competitive game against the Vikings
last week and have a defense that is more physical than in previous seasons.
However, the loss for starting RB Frank Gore for at least three weeks is a big
issue.
Last Ranking: 12
Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), OLB (pass rushing depth)
14) Chicago Bears: The offense must find a rhythm and getting RB Matt Forte
untracked might help. The defense has major issues at linebacker with injuries
and the better running offenses may give them trouble.
Last Ranking: 13
Needs Still to be Filled: QB (veteran depth), RB (veteran depth upgrade), MLB (depth), OLB
(depth)
15) Cincinnati Bengals: The steady performances from Cedric Benson are a big
reason why this team is able to play at a solid level so far. The defense is
challenging teams each week.
Last Ranking: 17
Needs Still to be Filled: C (veteran depth), OT (veteran depth), DT (depth), DE (pass
rusher), CB (depth/nickel), S (veteran depth)
16) Dallas Cowboys: The injuries at running back are a big concern as is the
play of Tony Romo. The defense must put more consistent pressure on the
quarterback for this team to be playoff bound.
Last Ranking: 19
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), OT (veteran depth), OLB (pass
rushing depth), CB (veteran depth)
17) San Diego Chargers: They have major issues on defense, but the offense is
clearly one of the NFL's best. Philip Rivers, if he continues to play at this
pace, will get serious consideration for the NFL MVP award.
Last Ranking: 18
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (LT/RT depth), G (depth), DE (depth), NT
(veteran depth),
S (veteran depth), CB (veteran depth)
18) Buffalo Bills: They played well for about two and a half quarters last week
against the Saints, but the defensive injuries are starting to take a major
toll.
Last Ranking: 16
Needs Still to be Filled: TE (veteran depth), G (depth), RT (depth/upgrade), MLB (depth), OLB (veteran depth)
19) Tennessee Titans: The passing game is improved, but the defense has been
taking a big step back in the secondary.
Last Ranking: 15
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), OT (veteran depth), LB
(OLB/MLB veteran depth), CB (veteran depth)
20) Jacksonville Jaguars: A healthy Mike Sims-Walker really adds a badly needed
physical element to their passing game. The defense still is a major work in
progress.
Last Ranking: 27
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), DE (depth), DT (veteran
depth), LB
(ILB/OLB-veteran depth), CB (veteran depth)
21) Arizona Cardinals: The defense has dropped off and the offense doesn't
seem as potent as last season.
Last Ranking: 20
Needs Still to be Filled: LT (depth), G (depth), C (depth), DE (depth),
ILB (veteran depth), CB (depth)
22) Seattle Seahawks: They are a different team on offense without QB Matt Hasselbeck. Seneca Wallace reminds me of Jeff Garcia, but I don't mean that in a
good way. He runs around without any sense of where he's going with the ball.
Last Ranking: 22
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (depth), CB (depth)
23) Miami Dolphins: The loss of starting QB Chad Pennington is huge. Expect them
to attempt to run the ball 30 times or more each game if possible.
Last Ranking: 21
Needs Still to be Filled: G (veteran depth), OT (veteran depth), ILB/OLB (depth),
S (veteran depth)
24) Houston Texans: I'll say this, their passing game is one of the best in the
NFL. However, the defense remains as one of the league's worst. They still can't
find anyone to rush the passer opposite Mario Williams.
Last Ranking: 26
Needs Still to be Filled: LT (depth), G (depth), DE (veteran depth), CB
(veteran depth)
25) Detroit Lions: They're playing competitive football each week, which is
saying something. The defense, however, is a major work in progress. Only two
starters remain from last year's starting 11 on defensive side of the ball.
Last Ranking: 31
Needs Still to be Filled: DE (depth), OLB (depth),
CB (speed)
26) Washington Redskins: QB Jason Campbell isn't playing too badly, but they
aren't able to run the ball effectively. The defense isn't playing as well as
many expected.
Last Ranking: 25
Needs Still to be Filled: G (depth), OT (depth), DE (pass rushing depth), OLB (depth), S (veteran depth)
27) Carolina Panthers: Defensive coordinator Ron Meeks' scheme isn't a good fit
for the personnel he has to work with. They simply aren't challenging anyone on
that side of the ball.
Last Ranking: 23
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (depth), OT (veteran depth), G (veteran depth), CB (nickel/depth),
S (veteran depth)
28) Oakland Raiders: Running the football was thought to be a strength, but so
far it's not.
Last Ranking: 24
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (veteran depth), G (depth), DT
(depth), LB (depth), S (veteran depth)
29) Kansas City Chiefs: They were very competitive the first two weeks, but fell
off last week. The defense simply doesn't challenge anyone.
Last Ranking: 29
Needs Still to be Filled: OT (depth), DE (depth), OLB (pass rushing depth), CB
(veteran depth)
30) Cleveland Browns: The move to Derek Anderson was the right one, but he has
his own issues with accuracy. The defense isn't nearly as good as it should be.
Last Ranking: 28
Needs Still to be Filled: LT/RT (depth), OLB (pass
rusher), S (depth), CB (veteran depth)
31) St. Louis Rams: Too many injuries on both sides of the ball for this to be
more than a 2-3 win team.
Last Ranking: 30
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (depth), DT (veteran depth), OLB (veteran depth), CB (veteran
depth)
32) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They are pitiful on defense, so much so that it's
going to be hard for them to keep any opponent under 20 points.
Last Ranking: 32
Needs Still to be Filled: WR (depth), LT (depth), DT (veteran depth), DE
(depth), CB (depth/nickel), S (depth)
